The Revelation of Gabriel Adam The Revelation Saga SL Duncan 9781605427379 Books

This was an intense, inventive, and original read. The story of Gabriel (Gabe) Adam, a teen who discovers that he's the incarnation of the Archangel Gabriel--just in time to prepare for an epic battle against the forces of evil--this book not only takes matters of faith seriously (a rarity in YA fantasy) but develops a convincing alternate reality based on scriptural and apocryphal texts (a rarity in any genre). As Gabe wrestles to accept his central role in a conflict he never imagined to be real, Duncan expertly draws the reader deeper into the hidden world of angels and demons (one of whom, by the way, is--literally--scary as hell). Readers should be warned that this book is not for the faint of heart: there's some graphic, gory stuff going on in its pages. And the somewhat formal third-person prose might throw readers accustomed to a more relaxed YA voice (for my part, I found the voice appropriate to Duncan's subject). This is the first book in a trilogy, and I can't wait to see the story play out over the next two installments.

The Revelation of Gabriel Adam The Revelation Saga SL Duncan 9781605427379 Books Reviews

Thanks to Medallion Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was an interesting and engaging read. I have to say that my favorite parts were the descriptions of the settings. I loved getting to see some of the fascinating places the characters went, which were described with an awesome eye to detail and drew me into them like I was actually there. The plot felt a little unfocused in places, and while I liked Gabriel, and especially Mika (AKA Michael), there was a bit of disconnect for me in feeling any true identity with them or what they faced. (Okay, that's probably to be expected--they're facing some crazy stuff, but you know what I mean!) I did almost put the book down early on when the trope of "it's just a theory" was thrown around in regards to a prominent scientific theory, because honestly that just bugs me to no end. Figure out the scientific theory before you decide to use that, otherwise I'm going to question all of the research that goes into your book. (Ummm, yeah, a bit of a rant there. I can't help it! It's what I teach for a living.) Anyhow, otherwise, this was an interesting read and I found myself enjoying the fast pace and interesting settings. I'm not sure if there will be more books in the series, but I'd read them!
Thoroughly enjoyed it, very descriptive, exciting and informative.
Great characters, settings and plot line. I can't wait for the next installment. Particularly good job for a first publication.
I loved this. Duncan brings adventure back to YA, with continent-hopping teenage heroes and ancient, sinister bad guys. Great characters, paced beautifully.
I absolutely love this book. Fresh, original, descriptive language, and I get lost in the story completely. Unpredictable and exciting!
I just finished ‘Revelation’ and thought it was a really great read. This is normally not the genre I would gravitate to so the fact that I didn’t want to put it down sort of surprised me. It is written with wonderful attention to detail. I appreciate that this is a new and unique take on whole ‘fantastic’ world thing because he chose to incorporate a ‘hellfire and brimstone’ component which was super cool. I believe this is going to be a series and I will definitely read the next one! It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this book were picked up by film. It would be a refreshing departure from what has become the norm as far as the current vampire and super hero plots go. Bleh. All round well done. Full marks.
While this is not normally a genre that would entice me to go out and buy a book, I would have missed a well-written and exciting journey into Last Days fantasy. Reflective of epic novels, but shorter, Revelation's Gabriel Adam is a protagonist that has enough character flaws to make him human, yet the courage and idealism to make him a believable modern day hero. While the story line is rather familiar...good against evil, saving the world from extinction, the descriptions Mr. Duncan uses put the reader into the story as a co-character! I smelled the smells. I felt the heat of the fires. I shivered in the dank and dark tunnels as I walked alongside Gabriel. And my heart beat sharply in tune to his as the threat of evil lurked ahead. Crawl a little deeper under the covers and be deliciously scared. And save the world!
