A lot of opportunities for great humour have been missed. The whole story puddles along but it’s not exiting or gripping. I picked this book because it came up in a search for authors like Terry Pratchett but it doesn’t come close.
I always knew there had to be a perfectly... um ... logical explanation for Stuff. Here it is. Rejoice and relax. The world is in good hands.
Ever wonder happened to the ring of the Nibelung after Gotterdammerung? Check this book out for a very funny update of the Ring to see how the hapless Malcolm inherits the all-powerful ring and becomes reluctant ruler of the world in modern-day England. He must confront contemporary incarnations of Alberich, Wotan, and some very seductive Rhinemaidens. The book is a good short (228 pages)fantasy novel that is lots of fun even if you don't know the Ring (and even funnier if you know the Ring well). It is great fun!
Malcolm is an ordinary fellow. Scratch that. Malcolm is sublimely mediocre...just ask his mother. That he should wind up Supreme Ruler of the World has to be the Mount Everest of all clerical errors. This is sublimely written nonsense from start to finish. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I bought this book to cheer myself up after reading something very dark and heavy. It worked perfectly. It's got a silly, lighthearted mood, but it's clever enough to keep you interested.
Expecting Someone Taller is Tom Holt's take on the aftermath of the Ring des Nibelung opera cycle by Richard Wagner. He takes Wagner's fantastic mythological tale one step further --- he puts it into everyday life in England, and makes a hysterical novel out of it. I read this years ago and was happy to buy it again for my so I can read it over and over again. It helps of your are familair with the operas, but it is not essential.
3 1/2 stars. If you have read much of Tom Holt's later novels this one follows his usual format of sarcasm, stretching reality humor and twisted plotting. It's just not as strong as the later books...missing the sneaky zingers. Still a good enough read as a change of pace from other sci fi or fantasy...since an author capable of doing humorous storytelling is rare.
