Did you enjoy the movie "She's the Man" ? The one where Viola wanted so much to be a Soccer Player, so she went undercover as her brother Sebastian in order to play while he was off doing what he wanted. The Academy by Emmaline Andrews was similar , where twins Kristine and Kristopher have been home-schooled on their planet together and Kristine dreams of being a pilot and her brother dreams of being part of the orchestra. Upon their sixteenth birthday, they recieve a message from their father - the Admiral , that Kristopher must now attend the school in order to become a pilot as his results and test scores are amazing. The thing is that it's been his sister doing his work for him all along, so that he could practice more for the orchestra. So, th twins organise a plan that Kristine will disguise herself as a boy and take her brothers place. So the story begins and Kristine arrives on campus as Kris. She is then allocated a room with North and thus begins their friendships, but Kris has a secret as she is slowly developing feelings for North and North is now wondering if he is gay as he feels attracted to Kris as well. What will happen though when the truth is revealed ? Kristina wants to be a navigator but unfortunately, her slightly futuristic world is somehow still stuck in the Dark Ages when it comes to women. She is forced to masquerade as her twin brother at an all boys academy with the hopes of receiving enough education so that she can eventually find work in the private sector--or at least that's the plan, but not surprisingly, it's a lot harder than she thought it would be.
This appears to be a standalone book so this was a quick but really satisfying read with no annoying cliffhanger! According to her bio, the author is already a best selling romance writer for adult books. I have no idea who she is but she was definitely able to prove in this story that you can still make standard plots like this fresh without sacrificing the characters. It was a compelling feel-good story where neither of the characters end up suddenly, and inexplicably becoming world class a-holes or idiots and no one suddenly dies for the sake of stupid plot twists, but the author also still manages to keep you guessing throughout the story.
I took off a star cause I felt like the whole futuristic slant to this book was pretty underdeveloped and weak (the science and space ships are only there for show) and the world building was kind of a joke...really there is just no way you can believably explain how a civilization could be so advanced yet so stuck in the Dark Ages (think about how unproductive and slow progress would be if we went back to educating only half the population; it would be a HUGE step backward not forward!) and thankfully, there were just a few paragraphs of clumsy info-dumping and then it's done and you can either accept the premise or not (I know I would've been annoyed if the author had tried take it beyond that). Other than that this story was awesome!
I look forward to reading more from this author but I've also noticed it's been almost 2 years since this book came out yet it still seems to be the only book the author has published under this name (I just hope it's not her last YA book!).
Oh my gosh, I don't even know where to begin with this story (in a good way). This was so out of my box. I usually read dramas and paranormal books, but I picked this up cause every once in a while I like to pick up something entirely different and boy was I surprised. This book was a gem. It's a sci-fi futuristic story. With planets and space and stuff. Lol. The academy is training (boys only, women aren't important) students to take on various positions upon a spacecraft. Kris (short for Kristina), really wants to go to the Academy, which of course isn't permitted. Meanwhile, her twin brother Kristopher, wants nothing to to with it-- in fact he'd rather be a musician. So Kris takes on the persona of her brother and attends this all-boys school where she gets into all sorts of trouble alongside a colorful array of characters. The best of course being her love interest, roommate, North.
The character's had great depth. But the... oh man, are they going to find out she's a girl... really kept this gripping tension going throughout the book. Her brother could lose a hand if the authorities find out. She could lose a lot more. North and Kris sort of have this forbidden.. but not really romance. Could not put it down. Stellar read. I hope Emmaline Andrews keeps surprising readers with more books.
The spine of the story is about self sacrifice for the ones you love, staying true to yourself even when you have to disguise the outer cover of your being and finding love despite all appearances and social norms. Krista has dreams of being a star pilot and her twin brother has dreams about being a renowned violinist, but their abusive father has different plans. In defiance Krista disguises herself as her brother and is enlisted into a boys only star academy to allow her brother the opportunity to try and follow his dreams despite their fathers plans. A little too late Krista begins to realize the very extreme consequences of getting caught, not just for herself, but also to her beloved brother. Will she be able to give up the love of a lifetime that is truly transcendent to ensure her secret remains safe from the aloof hero, who has secrets of his own... Such suspense will keep you turning page from page and enough action and angst to keep you up late into the night. As a reader of this author's adult line of books, I have to honestly say I am just as much in love with this YA book as I am with her more naughty books.
